Nutraceuticals market in Iran

It is estimated that more than half of the Iranian population is facing inadequate nutrition. Unhealthy lifestyle has led to high prevalence of vitamins and minerals deficiency. Consequently, most doctors in Iran tend to recommend consumption of vitamins and mineral supplements when prescribing medications to patients. On the other hand, with the prevalence of overweight and obesity reported to be 34.1% and 15.4% respectively, Iran is among the top 20 countries from overall prevalence of obesity point of view. Urbanization is considered to be one of the major reasons; while the greater availability of fast food and junk food in combination with a low activity lifestyle has also contributed to this trend. Despite the young age of many Iranians, only 20 percent of Iranians are physically active while the world average is 60 percent. Around a third of Iranian youths never play any sports.
